The Challenge
Residential electricity and heat account for approximately two-thirds of all greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in Germany. The country has one of the highest grid-emissions factors in Europe due to reliance on fossil fuel-based electricity and heat generation.
Solution Provided
Recognizing the need—and seeing the demand—to rapidly decarbonize the residential sector, Enpal has become a market leader in terms of scale, profitability and quality. Today, it is the only fully-integrated home decarbonization player of scale in Europe across customer acquisition and sales, installation, financing, and system management.
Currently, Enpal has a portfolio of about 60,000 installed systems across Germany and Italy. The company has ambitions to further scale across Europe and capitalize on significant consumer and political tailwinds for residential decarbonization on the back of Europe’s energy crisis, dependency on Russia (including upcoming mandatory rooftop solar panel laws), cost certainty and climate change.

Impact

1 Impact KPIs are cumulative values since the initial investment. Impact KPIs shown above are representative of major impact categories and are not fully extensive.
Enpal creates impact in several ways. Most is driven by rooftop solar installations, which displace grid electricity and support Germany’s ambitious goals to reach a target of 215GW of solar installed by 2030 (compared to 67 GW of deployed solar at the end of 2022). Additional impact comes from home batteries reducing curtailment of renewables and shifting renewable generation to meet peak demand, when marginal grid emissions tend to be higher than at the time of generation. Finally, the electric heat pumps Enpal installs for its customers have a much higher coefficient of power (COP) and work more efficiently compared to oil or gas-fired heating systems.
